2018 up and running

Hi everyone.

A belated happy new year from all of us in DSOTW. Apologies for the gap between blog posts… we’ve been rather busy for reasons which will become apparent in the coming month or two.

As some of you will know, we were meant to have kicked off the year with a spot at the ‘Giants Of Rock’ festival at Butlins Minehead at the end of last month, but for reasons best known to the promoter, it never happened. So… that being the case, we make our 2018 bow at The Flowerpot in Derby this Saturday (17th Feb) in what’s become one of our favourite dates in the annual diary. Always such a brilliant atmosphere and an amazing turn out when we play this place. This will be our 5th time there, and on the back of previous sell-outs, we advise you make sure you book tickets in advance if you’re thinking of coming along.

We follow this up with a return to The Queen’s Hall in Nuneaton exactly four weeks later on 17th March. Again, another venue that we’ve only been playing the last 4 years or so but is now a ‘must’ every time we plan our annual gig calendar. A proper rock gig with atmosphere to match.

Our spring schedule finishes with an old favourite of ours, the Swan Theatre in Worcester. We’ve been heading down to Worcester every year since 2000 and the brilliant stage and setting at the Swan affords us the opportunity to present the full theatre style show with projections so it’s always one we look forward to.

And this year, the Swan show will take on an extra special significance, which will become apparent in the coming weeks. A case of watch this space!

Full theatre style shows also follow in June with a trip down to the wonderful Norden Farm Centre For The Arts in Maidenhead (2nd) and then another perennial favourite, The Benn Hall in Rugby (30th). We hope to add a couple more to our present list of confirmed gigs so keep checking our ‘Live’ page for all show details and on how to get tickets.

See you soon!

A double header weekend to sign off 2017

Hi everyone.

It’s a busy weekend ahead with Saturday and Sunday night shows at TWO new venues for us. We haven’t done a ‘double-header’ weekend for some time so this will test the stamina but hey, what better way to spend a December weekend? Definitely way better than xmas shopping that’s for sure!

First up, on the Saturday evening (2nd Dec) we’re at Marchington Village Hall, near Uttoxeter.  We’re told it’s nearly sold out so please check with promoter Paul Needham on 01283 820374 to secure tickets if you fancy coming along. We’re on around 8.30pm.

Then on Sunday (3rd Dec) we return to Birmingham, but this time not to the Roadhouse but to the Hare & Hounds in King’s Heath, where we’ve been invited to headline the local celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s appearance there. As it’s a Sunday (and no doubt bearing in mind people getting up for work next morning!) we’re on stage at 7.30pm sharp. You should be able to pay on the door (£10) but advance tickets (£8) are available via this link:

These will be our LAST shows of 2017 so make sure you get your fix this weekend! Look forward to seeing some faces old and new at both shows!

Before we sign off, an exciting 2018 lies ahead with our first gig of the year being a slot at the ‘Giants Of Rock’ festival at Butlins in Minehead… just check out the poster here for the names we’re sharing the bill with (Hawkwind, Uriah Hep, Nazareth, Slade, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band as well as the main guys from bands such as Toto, Boston, Wishbone Ash…… and so on!) We’re playing on the Sunday but will definitely be there the day before to take in some of these amazing bands…  it’s an honour to be invited to be a part of an event such as this. Can’t wait!

Then, after Minehead, we have returns to the Flowerpot in Derby in February, The Queen’s Hall in Nuneaton in March, The Swan Theatre in April and Norden Farm Centre For The Arts in Maidenhead and The Benn Hall in Rubgy in June. Loads to look forward to. All confirmed gigs/shows are on the ‘Live’ page of this website.

Right, that’s all for now… make sure you have a good one folks!

THE LUNATICS ARE IN BENN HALL

Paraphrasing a line from Pink Floyd’s most successful album, we’re back at The Benn Hall in Rugby on Saturday 24th June for our first show for 4 months, following the Derby gig way back in February!

This year has seen us have to reduce the amount of shows we play due to other commitments and individual band member availability. However, our annual appearance in Rugby has always been a highlight of every year so it was a “no-brainer” to ensure we still did a show there.

We’re working hard in the rehearsal room throughout June to make sure we’re ready for the 24th and after talking to Abstract Audio (our regular lighting crew these days), this year’s show promises to be visually more spectacular than ever so we simply can’t wait to get back on stage again.

As most of you will know by now, Sofia has reluctantly had to leave the band to pursue her dream of a professional singing career. Her and Louise’s rendition of ‘The Great Gig In The Sky’ has always been a set highlight over recent years and we’ve had to lose it from the set for the last three shows. However, the good news is that Lou has been working on her own solo version and she’ll be debuting that this time out. Having heard her do it in rehearsal we know you’re in for a treat!

Advance tickets can be obtained from the Benn Hall Venue by calling in or ringing 01788 533719, or via their website at www.bennhall.com. There will also be a ‘pay on the door’ option available on the night.

Look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the 24th!

New year news

Firstly, a belated happy new year to everyone!

We kick off 2017 with a return to The Queens Hall in Nuneaton on Saturday 28th January. Always a good night at this venue so hopefully we’ll see you there! We then follow that up with a return to Derby and fingers crossed yet another sell-out at The Flowerpot. That’s on Saturday 18th February.

See our ‘live’ page for details.

As things stand those two shows are the only ones confirmed in the early part of the year before we play the Benn Hall in June. We have deliberately kept our diary light in the short term due to us needing to be certain about various band member’s availability before committing to shows with our venues. We’re all busy people and getting us the same room at the same time is no easy task! Please bear with us as 2017 might well be a bit of a transitional year but rest assured, we remain fully committed to continuing DSOTW’s considerable journey.

Finally, we are sad to say “goodbye” to Sofia who has had to take the decision to stand down from her 5 year long role as one of our backing singers. Her contribution since her debut in 2011 has been massive and she will be missed by us all, none more so than her fellow band members. However, the positive in all this is that she is now embarking on a career as a full-time professional singer, and whilst that makes her unavailable for our shows, this is her dream job and we sincerely wish her every success in everything she achieves in future. She will always be welcome and will always be one of the DSOTW family. In the short term Louise and Andy, with a little extra help from Jon, will make sure the backing vocals still shine on!

We look forward to seeing everyone in Nuneaton at the end of the month!
